VMFA assignment update

I had the pleasure of viewing Fine Art and Flowers this evening. It accomplishes exactly what I'd hoped it would - I viewed paintings I'd never noticed before in a new light and was struck by the imagination and inspiration of the florists who created the arrangements. 


Please note in reference to your assignment - you only have to email me photos of the arrangement and the artwork you choose to work from - but you must SEE the entire installation as well as the Chuck Close and Himalayan (S. Asia) Art Collections on the top floor. 


I included Francesco Clemente's miniatures on the list of things for you to see in the Lewis Collection but nix that as they are not on view at the moment. Instead make a special effort to see French Drawings (and Watercolors) from Corot to Cezanne on the second floor.


The Fine Art and Flowers will take you to most all of the galleries on the lisr if you pick up a map at the entrance and see the entire show as I've assigned. The Chuck Close Exhibition and the French Drawing Exhibitions are traveling exhibitions so you must make a special effort to see them.


I advise that you photograph the arrangement and artwork you are most inspired by as well as a few details of each. Ideally your watercolor will include details from the arrangement (a botanical lesson) as well as details from the artwork the florist referenced in the background.

Photograph the Flower/Fine Art installations which you find most inspiring

Create a watercolor inspired by this installation. Comment here with the florist's name and the title of the painting and artist's name you are reference and email me the photograph as a record of your experience.

Before Monday - post comment, send email and create the line drawing on watercolor paper that you will paint in class on Monday.

Create an 8.5 x 11 inch watercolor which builds upon your use of dry brush technique, decorative and symbolic line by creating a watercolor inspired by the book of Kells, illuminated manuscripts and watercolors inspired by this sacred style.

Considerations:

theme: use your initials and combine them with symbols which represent your history

Your watercolor should illuminate the viewer and tell us something about you as well as integrate the following details:

size: 8.5 x 11 inches

interesting balance of positive and negative space

depict transformation of your initials into compelling symbols

which relate to your personal story, history or ancestry

Your design should be created using pencil on 8.5 x 11 sketchbook paper.

transfer your design onto watercolor paper and use flat color, drybrush technique and fluid contour line to refine your illuminated initials.

Watercolor Studio 10.6 / Assignment for 10.11

IN CLASS


Explore the following Dry Brush Techniques on one sheet of watercolor paper:


*Stipple
*Hatch
*Cross Hatch
*Contour
*Cross Contour
*Invented Texture / observe detail from Charles Burchfield handout


Considerations:
Eliminate as much accidental white of the paper as possible
Overlap ALL techniques using every color and every brush, sponges, etc in your collection
Explore various ways to hold brushes and experiment with the amount of water in your brush as you try each technique


HOMEWORK


Create a study of the Charles Burchfield painting you have been assigned or a painting inspired by his work of the rocks and nature of Belle Island in Richmond, VA.


Review the color used in the painting online or in a color print made on campus.
Fill page, consider the edges, positive negative space, color and dry brush technique used in the work you are studying.


Your Burchfield study is due at the beginning of class on Monday.

Monday:
Studio time: Critique of 4 watercolors.
Review the goals of each assignment when considering the strengths and weaknesses of each watercolor.

For Wednesday:

Read watercolor history handout supplied today prior to class on Wed.
Research / Google artists mentioned in the handout which you find relate most to your personal aesthetic.
Comment on this blog post with a link to the artist's work you find most compelling, which you would want to research further.

Review this link in preparation for the Fine Art and Flowers assignment.
