  1. Jamie Wyeth: Contemporary Realist
Loved the subjects of his work from landscapes, animals to people. Liked the unusual viewpoints used in the painting of the animals. Several of the animal paintings appeared to be drawn from a “ground level” viewpoint.
What I liked best was his use of light and shadows. The contrast of the lights and darks make the images appear dimensional and nearly photo- realistic.

  2. In Hockney’s Video series: The Secret Knowledge, he clearly demonstrates artists were using optical devices/tools to draw photo realistic pictures. This is unsettling information when you consider no one has questioned how the great masters created their work until Hockney! Fascinating and unbelievable to think artist used such devices…… and yet very ingenious. As for the issue of “cheating” in video 8, Hockney addresses this idea stating “once traced the artist must paint in his own way!” It seems unusual to me to trace an image.. But I do agree, it is the artist painting skills that finish the work and ultimately makes the image his own.
The question I would ask Hockney: Do you or have you ever used an optical device to create a painting on paper or canvas?

  3. It's a tose up between Jamie Wyeth and David Hockney. I like the subject matters of Wyeth. they're quarky and fun to look at. On the other hand I like Hockney's style. The way the colors are loose and controled at the sme time is interesting to me.
